Tinubu Proposes ₦1.78 Trillion FCT Budget, Urges Swift Passage for Capital Development

President Bola Tinubu has officially presented a ₦1.78 trillion budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the National Assembly, seeking prompt approval to support critical development projects across Nigeria’s capital.

In a letter read on the floor of the House of Representatives by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Tuesday, Tinubu highlighted that the budget aligns with Section 299 of the Nigerian Constitution, which authorises the president to submit the FCT’s budget to the legislature.

The president stressed that the proposed 2025 FCT budget prioritises key sectors such as:

  • Healthcare

  • Social welfare

  • Agriculture

  • Employment and job creation

“The passage of the budget would facilitate investment in health and social welfare, increase agricultural production, and improve the creation of jobs,” Tinubu wrote.

Breaking down the budget, Tinubu noted that:

  • 85% of the funds will be used to complete ongoing infrastructure and development projects

  • 15% is earmarked for new initiatives

He concluded his message with an appeal to lawmakers:

“I urge the National Assembly to give this budget the urgent attention it deserves, in the interest of accelerating development within the FCT.”

The proposal comes amid growing calls for improved infrastructure and public services in Abuja, and if passed, it could signal a renewed push toward urban development and service delivery in the capital.
