The Federal Government has unveiled plans to roll out three bold, family-focused national initiatives in commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Families, themed “Family-oriented policies for sustainable development: Towards the second world summit for social development.”

This was disclosed in a statement on Friday by the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, through her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jonathan Eze.

“We are pleased to announce the following strategic actions under the Renewed Hope Agenda for women, children, and family cohesion,” she stated.

The new initiatives include:

  1. National Framework for Family Cohesion
A nationwide outreach programme will inform the development of a comprehensive framework to support urban resilience, strengthen family units, and rebuild community bonds in partnership with state governments, NGOs, traditional and religious institutions, and other stakeholders.

  2. National Guidelines for Alternative Child Care
These will focus on safeguarding vulnerable children outside of their natural homes, ensuring they grow in love, dignity, and protection. This complements the National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children.

  3. National Family Strengthening and Development Programme
This flagship poverty-reduction and family empowerment programme aims to reach over five million Nigerians in its first phase. It will address issues like domestic violence, weak support systems, and socio-cultural disruptions, and will operate across all 774 LGAs as a community-driven initiative.

The Minister also confirmed the inauguration of the national committee tasked with developing the framework for family cohesion and announced the scale-up of the Nigerian for Women Programme, targeting 4.5 million women across all 36 states and the FCT.

“We remain resolute in driving structures and policies that restore dignity to caregiving, empower families, nurture children, and protect the vulnerable,” she added.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim called on CSOs, religious leaders, development partners, media, and the private sector to collaborate in creating a united front to protect and uplift families in Nigeria.

“Families are not secondary, but central,” she affirmed.
