Nigeria Bids Final Farewell to Former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura
Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following his death in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025. The burial, held on Tuesday and conducted according to Islamic rites, saw national leaders, military officers, and citizens pay their last respects in a solemn state ceremony.
In a deeply emotional and historic farewell, the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The solemn Islamic burial ceremony drew thousands of mourners and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, marking the end of an era for one of the nation’s most prominent leaders.
Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness, served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and later as a two-term democratically elected president. His final journey began when a Nigerian Air Force aircraft transported his body back home, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top government officials.
Upon arrival at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, the casket—draped in Nigeria’s national colours—was transferred by helicopter to Daura, where a sea of citizens lined the route in silent tribute.
The funeral prayers were held at Buhari’s private residence, led by the Chief Imam of Katsina State. At exactly 5:50 p.m., his body was interred. In a moving display of unity and honour, Army Generals and Service Chiefs carried his remains to the gravesite and observed a 21-gun salute in his memory.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, several state governors, cabinet members, former presidents, and international dignitaries were present to pay their final respects. The Federal Government declared July 15 a public holiday, allowing Nigerians to participate in the momentous occasion.
The ancient town of Daura was steeped in sorrow and reverence, with many residents describing the late President as a disciplined, humble, and peaceful man. “He was humble and disciplined till the end,” said Ismaila Ibrahim, a long-time neighbour.
Despite the heavy security presence, normal activities continued in a subdued manner as the town collectively grieved the passing of its most illustrious son.
Tributes have continued to pour in from global leaders, with many remembering Muhammadu Buhari as a statesman of integrity who committed his life to the service of Nigeria.
As prayers rose and the final rites were completed, the nation paused to honour a man who left an indelible mark on its history. The legacy of Muhammadu Buhari will undoubtedly continue to influence Nigeria’s political and moral landscape for years to come.
