Tragedy in Abia: Man Sets Family Ablaze Over Infidelity Suspicion — FIDA Demands Justice
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Abia State branch, has strongly condemned a disturbing case of domestic violence and child abuse that recently rocked the Onicha Ngwa community in Obingwa Local Government Area.
In the early hours of Saturday, Mr. Udochi Amala, a 40-year-old man, allegedly set his wife, Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three children ablaze in their home over suspected infidelity. The tragic incident resulted in the death of one of the daughters almost immediately, while unconfirmed reports suggest that the wife and two other children died later in the hospital.
According to initial statements, Udochi admitted to having marital issues and being emotionally overwhelmed. “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life,” he reportedly said. He also acknowledged that he had no concrete evidence of infidelity.
The Abia State Police Command, through spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the incident, FIDA Abia, in a statement signed by Chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and Secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, expressed “shock, outrage, and deep concern,” calling it a “gross violation of human rights and dignity.”
FIDA is demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. The organization also called for stronger support systems for survivors of domestic violence and child abuse, urging the public to speak out and report such cases to prevent future tragedies.
FIDA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of women and children and stressed the urgent need for societal intervention to end gender-based violence in Nigeria.
