Relief for FUTA Graduate Jamiu Basola as JAMB Reactivates Portal, Adds Name to Matriculation List

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reactivated the portal of Jamiu Basola, a 2024 Civil Engineering graduate of FUTA, after it was earlier flagged for fake admission. His name has now been included on the matriculation list, a requirement for NYSC mobilisation, following interventions by FUTA officials and NANS leadership

Relief for FUTA Graduate Jamiu Basola as JAMB Reactivates Portal, Adds Name to Matriculation List

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reactivated the profile of Jamiu Basola, a graduate of Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), bringing an end to months of confusion and emotional distress over his NYSC mobilisation.

Basola, who completed his academic programme in 2024 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.41, was previously flagged for possessing a “fake admission” during his final clearance. The development shocked the academic community, especially as he had sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2017 and gained admission into FUTA in 2018.

According to Basola, the issue was brought to his attention when the school’s Student Affairs Division informed him that his mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps had been rejected. Upon checking, his name was missing from JAMB’s official matriculation list.

“I was advised to verify my details on the JAMB matriculation list, which indicated fake admission,” he said.

Following several failed attempts to access his JAMB portal, Basola reached out to FUTA’s registrar, vice-chancellor, and the chairman of the admissions committee. His case later gained national attention after he took to social media to highlight his plight.

In a telephone interview on Monday, Basola confirmed to Gisttrend that the JAMB portal had been reactivated and his name added to the matriculation list.

“My portal was locked. But now, I am able to log in; I can now reprint. My name was not on the matriculation list, but now it has changed,” he stated.

While he has yet to be officially mobilised for NYSC, the restoration of his portal and credentials marks a significant step forward.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also released a statement on Monday, celebrating the development as a victory for justice and student welfare. According to NANS National PRO, Adeyemi Ajasa, the intervention was led by the national president, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, and reinforced by support from NANS South-West Zone D.

“Jamiu’s academic dedication was regrettably challenged by a ‘fake admission’ flag after years of diligent study. His fight was indeed our fight, and his victory is a triumph for every Nigerian student,” Ajasa said.

NANS also acknowledged the efforts of FUTA’s Civil Engineering Department, which formally contacted JAMB to clarify Basola’s admission status. The organisation pledged to continue monitoring the case to ensure Basola’s inclusion in the next NYSC batch.

“This resolution underscores the power of collective action and NANS’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerian students,” the statement added.

Basola’s case initially sparked widespread concern after JAMB, through its Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, claimed that he was “an unknown entity to the Board concerning admission” and alleged that the admission letter in his possession “did not emanate from its system.”

Despite JAMB’s initial position, Basola’s persistence and advocacy—supported by student bodies and his department—led to the reactivation of his student profile and a hopeful path toward national service.
