An unidentified young man, alleged to be involved in vandalizing a transformer in Calabar, has been set ablaze.
On February 10, a similar incident occurred when a man whose identity was not established was burnt alive at dawn over the vandalization of a transformer in the same neighbourhood.
Exactly one month later, on Tuesday, 10th March 2026, a suspected mob action occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Palm Street by Target Junction in Calabar.
The mob, including members of the local vigilante team, reportedly apprehended and subsequently burnt him to death before the arrival of the police.
Confirming the incident, Police PRO, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said: “Upon receiving the information, a police patrol team swiftly mobilized to the scene, where the burnt corpse was found in front of the transformer.
“Items recovered at the scene include an old-model electricity meter box, a piece of copper wire, and electric cables, suspected to be vandalized materials.”
The PRO added that local government authorities and the Environmental Health Services were contacted to evacuate the corpse.
The command warned that mob action or jungle justice is illegal and unacceptable.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and prosecution rather than take the law into their own hands.”
