2027 Power Play: Atiku Offers Peter Obi VP Slot in Single-Term Coalition Deal
There are strong indications that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, a vice-presidential slot under a joint single-term agreement. According to insiders, both leaders met earlier this year in the UK to discuss the coalition. While Obi is reportedly on board with the plan, he is currently seeking support from his loyalists. Meanwhile, both camps are considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a possible new platform, due to ongoing crises in the PDP and LP. The proposed coalition aims to present a united front against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

2027 Power Play: Atiku Offers Peter Obi VP Slot in Single-Term Coalition Deal
Fresh political revelations have emerged, suggesting that Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has offered Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential flagbearer, a vice-presidential slot in a proposed single-term joint ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to credible sources familiar with the coalition talks, Atiku and Obi met earlier this year in the United Kingdom, where Atiku floated the idea of a coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The proposal includes Atiku serving just one term, after which power would be handed over to Obi.
Peter Obi Reportedly On Board
Sources disclosed that Obi has tentatively accepted the offer and is currently engaging with his core supporters and loyalists to solidify the agreement. The move rekindles memories of the 2019 election, where Obi ran as Atiku’s running mate under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), but the duo lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.
The proposed coalition gained momentum following a March 20 meeting in Abuja, where Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other political figures announced plans to form a united front for the 2027 polls.
PDP, LP Crisis Sparks Search for New Platform
With internal crises plaguing both the PDP and LP, discussions have reportedly shifted toward adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a new platform. Sources say loyalists of both leaders have begun engaging with the ADC’s leadership, positioning the party as a viable alternative should reconciliation fail within their current parties.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was initially considered but allegedly dropped due to suspected APC influence within its ranks.
Official Silence, Strategic Moves
Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, confirmed that discussions around a coalition are ongoing but declined to comment on any formal agreements. Similarly, Obi’s allies, including Peter Ahmeh of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), remained tight-lipped, signaling the sensitive nature of the deal.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of ADC, Ralph Nwosu, confirmed ongoing talks with political stakeholders and hinted at a major announcement before week’s end. Nwosu emphasized the ADC’s commitment to providing credible leadership not only for Nigeria but for the African continent.
Mixed Reactions from Political Figures
The political overtures have drawn mixed reactions. PDP’s Diran Odeyemi criticized Atiku’s continued ambition, stating bluntly that “his time has passed” and that offering Obi the VP slot is presumptive.
On the other hand, Anthony Sani of the Arewa Consultative Forum noted there is nothing strange about the potential alliance, pointing out that Atiku and Obi had previously worked together in 2019.
As Nigeria inches toward the 2027 elections, the potential Atiku-Obi ticket remains one of the most talked-about developments. Whether it will hold firm under political scrutiny and party dynamics is something only time can tell.
