TikToker Murja Kunya Sentenced to Jail for Naira Abuse, Becomes EFCC/CBN Ambassador

Popular Kano-based TikToker, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira, in violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, by Justice Simone Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano, following a one-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Kunya was convicted for spraying and stepping on Naira notes while dancing in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, an act captured on video and shared widely on social media.

EFCC Statement:
"You, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, on the 28th of December, 2023... tampered with Naira notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying and matching on same... thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 21 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007."

From Fugitive to Convict
Initially arrested in January 2025, Kunya was granted administrative bail but later absconded to avoid prosecution. She was re-arrested on March 16, 2025, after an intensive EFCC surveillance operation and arraigned on May 20, 2025, where she pleaded guilty to the amended charge.

Following her plea, prosecutor Musa Isah urged the court to convict her based on the facts of the case.

Jail or Fine—Plus a Unique Twist
Justice Amobeda sentenced her to six months imprisonment with an option of a ₦50,000 fine. However, the court introduced a rehabilitative twist to the punishment by appointing her an ambassador for the EFCC and CBN in the fight against Naira abuse.

Social Media Advocacy Mandate
As part of the sentencing, Kunya is now mandated to use her social media platforms to educate her followers about:

The importance of respecting the Naira

The legal implications of currency abuse and mutilation

Supporting online advocacy campaigns by EFCC and CBN

The move is seen as both a punishment and a public sensitization strategy, leveraging her massive online influence for positive social change.
