Missing Champions League Spot “Could Be a Blessing” — Ruben Amorim Eyes Rebuild After Dismal United Season
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says missing out on the UEFA Champions League may help the club rebuild, following their worst Premier League finish in 50 years.

Missing Champions League Spot “Could Be a Blessing” — Amorim Eyes Rebuild After United’s Worst Season Since 1974
Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, says the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League might actually be a blessing in disguise, as he looks to rebuild a struggling team after their worst finish in the Premier League since 1974.
Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Amorim tried to find silver linings after a 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final ended any hopes of European competition next season.
“For us not to be in the Champions League could be an advantage—to perform better, to prepare better for games, to build that core we need for the future,” the Portuguese coach said.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag during the season, admitted that with limited resources, the club would need to be strategic over the summer.
Light at the End of the Tunnel?
United’s shocking 15th-place finish in the Premier League and loss in Europe capped a dismal year for the former giants. But Amorim is taking a more focused approach:
“I don’t want the team to think about a big target. Just a small target—win the first game, then move to the next,” he told reporters.
“When you are Manchester United, people expect you to be at the top. But we have to understand the context.”
The manager’s phone rang mid-press conference, sparking laughter from the media and breaking the tension—perhaps a much-needed human moment after such a difficult campaign.
Preseason Friendlies Bring Hope—and Revenue
United are set to face a Southeast Asian XI on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur before traveling to Hong Kong for another friendly on Friday. The BBC reports the tour is expected to generate around $10 million (£7.8 million) in revenue—vital for a club needing summer reinforcements.
Players Welcome Asia Tour
Midfielder Mason Mount said he was excited to be part of the post-season tour despite the quick turnaround from a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
“There were hundreds of people waiting for us at the airport. We’re excited to be over here and obviously looking forward to the game tomorrow,” Mount said.
With temperatures soaring to 37°C (99°F) and thunderstorms predicted on match day, fans are expected to pack the 84,000-capacity Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Amorim also hinted he might use the tour to give fringe players and young talents a chance to prove themselves ahead of what’s expected to be a crucial summer of rebuilding.
