Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized that lawmakers were elected to collaborate with the Executive, not confront it, in order to move Nigeria forward.
Speaking in a documentary marking two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Akpabio dismissed claims of a rubber-stamp legislature, stressing that the National Assembly works in the nation’s best interest.
“Your constituents didn’t give you boxing gloves. You’re there to work for Nigeria, not fight the Executive,” he said.
He praised the cordial relationship between both arms of government, attributing it to shared goals and the fact that Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and the First Lady are former senators.
Akpabio revealed the Senate is pushing a bill to prioritise local vehicle purchases, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and revive collapsed industries like textiles, cotton, and palm oil.
“We’re making laws to boost local production and support small businesses. Even producing and packaging vinegar can make you a millionaire,” he said.
He also highlighted key legislative wins such as the Student Loan Act, Minimum Wage Bill, and Tax Reforms, reaffirming the 10th Assembly’s commitment to pro-people governance.
On criticisms, Akpabio said the Senate has rejected nominees and amended bills where necessary, ensuring laws align with the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
“We don’t waste time on anything that will improve Nigerians’ living standards,” he concluded.
