NDLEA Intercepts 2,687 Tonnes of Cannabis in Cross River, Arrests Three in Overnight Raid
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a massive drug bust in Cross River State, seizing 2,687 tonnes of cannabis sativa and seeds during a coordinated overnight operation in Obereakai community, located in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
State Commander Rachael Umebuali revealed the breakthrough on Thursday during a press briefing in Calabar, stating that the operation lasted four hours—from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM—and was carried out after a credible tip-off.
“We discovered a warehouse with several bags of Indian hemp. The seeds alone weighed 163kg and could be cultivated on at least 1,000 hectares of farmland,” Umebuali said.
She expressed grave concern over the potential consequences if such a quantity of cannabis were to reach the streets, calling it a “significant threat to society.”
Three Suspects in Custody
The NDLEA arrested three individuals linked to the operation:
-
Friday Archibong, 47
-
Abraham Anthony, 21
-
Utibe Okon, 24
According to Archibong, he is the landlord of the premises but had rented it to one Ruben Udo, who allegedly fled the scene with his family.
Anthony disclosed that the cannabis was usually transported by boat via the Okpo River, directly from farms owned by Ruben Udo.
NDLEA Vows to Go After the Mastermind
Commander Umebuali reaffirmed the agency's commitment to eliminating drug trafficking networks within the state:
“The people go to remote areas, difficult to access because of terrain, to perpetuate this evil. But as long as they can reach there, we will also reach there. It is our business to combat this menace.”
She thanked the Cross River State Government, particularly the Office of the State Security Adviser, for their support in the successful raid, and assured the public that efforts are underway to track down the main suspect, Ruben Udo.
Community Impact
The NDLEA stressed that the seizure was not just a victory for law enforcement but a major move to safeguard local communities from the socio-economic and health risks posed by widespread drug circulation.
