Police Debunk Viral Video Claims: 89 Katsina Youths Legitimately Employed at Dangote Refinery – Lagos Command

Amid growing speculation over a viral video showing a large group of young men arriving in Ibeju-Lekki, the Lagos State Police Command has issued a firm clarification.

In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the 89 individuals are labourers from Katsina State, recruited to work at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki.

“Upon receipt of the information on May 14, 2025, officers from the Command immediately deployed to the location to ascertain the facts,” the statement read.

According to the police, both the recruiting contractor and the refinery’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) affirmed that the workers had been properly documented and cleared to reside and work within the refinery premises.

“The contractor confirmed he personally sourced and transported the men for employment,” the statement said.

Thorough Screening and Verification

The Command also conducted a comprehensive screening of the workers:

  • No incriminating items were found in their possession.

  • Each individual provided a National Identification Number (NIN) which was successfully verified.

  • The group complied with all security checks and presented valid identification.

CP Jimoh Calls for Calm and Caution

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, appealed for calm and urged the public to avoid spreading panic or misinformation.

“The Command remains committed to maintaining law and order across Lagos State and will continue to respond promptly to all matters relating to public safety,” the Commissioner assured.

He emphasised the need for public responsibility in the digital space, particularly the importance of fact-checking before sharing content.
