Oyo Govt Approves ₦4.5bn Relief Package for Bodija Explosion Victims
In a significant move to assist victims and bring closure to affected communities, the Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.5 billion as financial assistance for victims and survivors of the Bodija explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2025.
The decision was made on Wednesday, May 14, during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Humanitarian Support Continues
Speaking on the development, Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, explained that the newly approved fund is in addition to the over ₦200 million already spent by the state in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. The earlier expenditures covered:
Temporary accommodation
Feeding and welfare
Hospital treatments
Security and logistics
“This additional funding demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the victims and helping them rebuild their lives,” Oyelade stated.
Revocation of Titles, Memorial Construction
Oyelade also announced that the Council has ratified a recommendation from a 10-man committee to revoke the title deeds of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, identified as the epicentre of the explosion.
As part of recovery efforts and in honour of those affected, a monument will be constructed on the revoked site.
“The decision was taken in the public interest,” said Oyelade. “It forms part of a broader strategy to ensure healing, accountability, and long-term remembrance.”
A Tragedy Remembered
The Bodija explosion shook Ibadan to its core, claiming several lives and displacing many families. While investigations into the cause revealed storage of explosive materials in a residential area, the event sparked widespread outrage and calls for stricter safety regulations across the state.
Why It Matters
This ₦4.5 billion package marks a bold step by the Oyo State Government toward compassionate governance and public accountability. As rebuilding begins, it also underscores the need for stronger urban safety policies to prevent such tragedies in the future.
